Beijing’s top official overseeing Hong Kong affairs on Thursday met with government officials as part of his week-long inspection trip to gain a better understanding of the city, during which he affirmed the work of the current administration and highlighted his hopes for the authorities.

Flanked by SAR top officials, the director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HKMAO), Xia Baolong, arrived at government headquarters in Admiralty.

“Hello, everyone,” said Xia, as he waved to reporters.

Speaking after the meeting, Chief Secretary Eric Chan said various issues were discussed, including Hong Kong’s economic development and district governance, as well as the Basic Law Article 23 national security legislation.

Chan said Xia recognised and affirmed the work of the current administration while giving encouragement to local officials, hoping that they would unite and work hard to do their best.

“We feel deeply that Director Xia is very concerned and familiar with Hong Kong affairs. He also has high hopes for Hong Kong in implementing high-level security and high-quality development,” he said.

Chan added that the government is now more determined to work with all sectors in society to safeguard national security and ensure people can have better living and working conditions.

The chief secretary also said Xia attached great importance to improving district governance, adding the government would continue to take concrete steps to respond to concerns of low-income families.

Financial Secretary Paul Chan also met Xia, briefing him about the SAR’s latest economic and financial situation; its development in commerce, innovation and technology; as well as issues relating to land and housing supply.

Chan said the senior mainland official is very familiar with how Hong Kong is doing economically.

“We had a very good exchange of views. He understands the situation of Hong Kong very well. And during the course of discussion, he encouraged us to continue with our good work. He is confident in the current administration and appreciates our work,” the finance chief said.

“Going forward, the whole team in the government will continue to work very hard to further develop our economy, and in the process make good use of the various policy support and measures from the central authorities.”

This is Xia’s first visit to the SAR as director the revamped HKMAO, which is under the purview of the Communist Party of China Central Committee rather than the State Council.
